Optical slider-bearing test rig
Flat-on-flat conformal contact is one of the basic models of lubricant film lubrication. Due to the enormous difficulties of aligning the two flats at fixed angles, there has been little progress in measuring lubricating films in conformal contacts, and experimental data are very limited. A novel test apparatus capable of measuring lubricating film thickness in a slider-on-disc contact has been built up in our group. Lubricating oil film thickness can be determined under different geometrical wedges, speeds and loads. The test apparatus provides a new approach for lubrication assessment under conformal contact conditions.
